Exercise & fitness and Personal training apprenticeship

The health and fitness industry is made up of private health clubs and gyms that are publicly run through local authority leisure facilities.
Over 7 million people are members of gyms and fitness centres in Britain, so there’s a need for plenty of fitness instructors to teach people how to safely and sensibly improve their fitness and reach their health goals. Fitness instructors work with all kinds of people – from athletes who want to better their marathon times to elderly people who would like to become more mobile – to put together personal health plans, lead exercise classes and induct new members into the gym.

As a fitness/gym instructor your responsibilities could include reception duties, planning and delivering sessions for members and membership sales. As an exercise instructor, you might prepare, deliver and evaluate classes in aerobics, step aerobics, circuit training or aqua aerobics. Depending on your employer, you might also have to help out with other more general tasks such as working on reception, keeping the pool clean, advertising the gym and performing maintenance checks.

On completion of the Intermediate Level apprenticeship you could progress onto a specialist role such as teaching exercise to children.

On the Advanced Level Personal Training apprenticeship you could train for a more specialist role requiring greater technical knowledge and skill, as a personal trainer.

You will need to have excellent fitness levels as well as a positive, motivating, ‘can do’ attitude. You should be willing to work as part of a team or on your own and prepared to work shifts and sometimes unsociable hours. You might be required to undergo police checks if you are working with vulnerable adults and children.

The qualifications and training you gain through this apprenticeship will enable you to join the Register of Exercise Professionals  which has been established to allow employers to know that instructors, coaches, trainers and teachers are operating at the highest standards.
